Summer in SLO

June Great Story by Madison Montague, 2017-18 Central Coast Climate Fellow

Summer is here! Yay! And although June gloom has been real on the coast, there have still been a few beautiful sunny days to soak up some Vitamin D and head out to the beach or on a hike. Gleaning in this weather is nice, as is taking long walks through downtown on my lunch break.

As I near the end of my service term and my stay in San Luis Obispo, I hope to truly take advantage of the natural splendor that surrounds me. I intend to plan after work hikes, weekend beach days, and a wine tasting trip through the back country roads in the county. Hopefully I get to do it all!

This Fall I am moving to Madrid to teach English. I look forward to living in a big city – it’ll be quite a shift from the relatively rural San Luis Obispo. As I move there, I hope to continue enjoying the places around me – taking in as much as the world as I can. One thing that I learned this year is how to make great use of small amounts of money – I intend to use this skill to travel to as many places and countries as possible next year. When I return from Spain about a year from now, I can only hope to have learned as much as I did through the CivicSpark program. From picking up technical skills, to true life lessons, this year has truly changed my outlook on life and who I want to be. I’m happy with the decisions that I have made – even though not all of them were great. I look forward to the next step and the rest of my service term. Yay CivicSpark and Summer!
