Bicycle Friendly Communities Program

Fellow supports agency’s involvement in the National Bicycle Friendly Community Program.

This may include:

  • Providing technical assistance to local jurisdictions in becoming a National Bicycle Friendly Community
  • Conducting community outreach to increase bike ridership
  • Supporting local activities in May related to National Bike Month
  • Organizing community rides
  • Working with experts to create public education opportunities about alternative transportation

Climate Action Dashboard

Fellow designs, or works with consultants to design, an online dashboard that monitors and communicates climate action progress.

This may include:

  • Generating resources for communication about the dashboard to both community members and local government staff

Climate Action Metrics Monitoring/Mapping

Fellow compiles data to evaluate the sustainability progress of local government agencies in the region.

This may include:

  • Determining best metrics and indicators
  • Researching and compiling data on sustainability progress
  • Analyzing and disseminating results to inform future climate action projects

Climate Action Plan Annual Report

Fellow creates a formal report synthesizing climate action metrics and implementation projects to showcase progress made on Climate Action Plan measures and goals.

This may include:

  • Researching and compiling information on climate action projects and programs in the agency
  • Creating indicators and metrics for measuring climate action progress
  • Developing resources for communicating progress to community members and local government staff

This effort may be paired with creation of a climate action dashboard or GHG inventory and emissions reporting.

Climate Action Plan Implementation

Fellow works on a variety of climate action implementation projects, ranging from facilitating robust community and stakeholder engagement to drafting policies and programs to meet GHG reduction goals.

This may include:

  • Researching existing codes/ordinances/plans for decarbonization best practices
  • Writing draft resolutions and ordinances
  • Identifying opportunities to implement best practices
  • Community outreach/education
  • Developing a sustainability committee for increased community engagement and buy-in
  • Supporting events that mobilize community members, such as Earth Day events

Climate Action, Adaptation, or Sustainability Plan Development

Fellow participates in creation of a Climate Action, Adaptation, or Sustainability Plan.

Depending on the size of the city and complexity of the city’s assets, this may include:

  • Best practice research and recommendations
  • Creation of a framework for the plan
  • Developing content for the plan
  • Project management and acting as liaison between local government staff and the consultant writing the plan
  • Robust community engagement in the plan development process, including developing community engagement plans, facilitating community task forces, planning community meetings, and reviewing and responding to community feedback

This is often paired with emissions inventorying or other climate action analysis projects.

Disadvantaged Community Involvement in Integrated Regional Water Management

Fellow works on the Strength and Needs Assessment and Community Engagement and Education elements of the DCI Program to engage people in disadvantaged and underrepresented communities and include their voices in water management planning.

This may include:

  • Identifying community leaders and effective agency programs
  • Building relationships between the agency and interested stakeholders
  • Mobilizing a cohort of interns from California State University and community college campuses
  • Working with other partners to support interns with training on IRWM topics, cohort coordination, and mentorship
  • Assisting with other specific program elements, such as the completion of community listening workshops and a community water ethnography report on the cultural, social, and water-related strengths and needs of watershed communities

Electric Vehicle Transportation Planning and Outreach

Fellow helps prepare the region for increased electric vehicle utilization by engaging diverse stakeholders to inform regional infrastructure plans.

This may include:

  • Engagement with regional municipalities and other industry stakeholders to develop streamlined charging station installation processes
  • Research and analysis to inform regional planning documents
  • Assessment of the region for potential fueling locations
  • Engagement with fleets and distributors to promote alternative fuel vehicle use

Fellow creates a municipal or community-wide Energy Action Plan.

This may include:

  • Research and analysis on current energy use trends
  • Research and recommendation of decarbonization and energy reduction best practices
  • Creation of a framework for the plan
  • Content development for the plan
  • Project management and acting as liaison between local government staff and the consultant writing the plan
  • Robust community engagement support in the plan development process

Energy Benchmarking

Fellow tracks municipal and/or community energy use.

This may include:

  • Collecting, compiling, and analyzing data
  • Developing a system for easy access to future data
  • Researching ordinances, reach codes, and other strategies to reduce energy use

This effort may be paired with other Energy Action Plan development or implementation projects.
